The lab

Made by hand, labelled with your name

Le Labo opened its first lab at 233 Elizabeth Street in Nolita in 2006. Fabrice Penot and Eddie Roschi, both ex-Armani, wanted the opposite of a department store counter: no shrink wrap, no mass batch, no celebrity face.

Perfume is still blended and filled to order, then labelled by hand with the date, the city and, if you ask, your name. Candles are poured by hand. Nothing is made before somebody wants it.

The manifesto on the wall has not changed much. It says the soul of a fragrance comes from the intention with which it is created and the attention with which it is prepared.

We believe the future of luxury lies in craftsmanship.

Refills

Refill the bottle, keep the glass

Bring an empty Le Labo bottle to a participating lab and it is refilled on the spot. Online refills work the same way: send the bottle back, get the same bottle returned full.

You cannot switch scent or size when refilling, and only eligible creations qualify. Everything else, including the label and the pump, stays in service.

  • Refills cost less than a new bottle
  • Glass, pump and label stay out of the bin
  • Lab refills and online refills both run year round
  • Personalisation stays as it was printed

Questions

What people ask before they buy

Short answers, no marketing padding.

What is Le Labo?

Le Labo is a New York fragrance house founded in 2006 by Fabrice Penot and Eddie Roschi. The name is French for "the laboratory". Perfume is blended, filled and labelled by hand in the labs, and the label carries the date, the city and often the name of the person it was made for.

What is the most popular Le Labo perfume?

Santal 33 is the best known, and the one that built the house. Another 13, Rose 31, Thé Noir 29 and Bergamote 22 are the other four that come up again and again.

What does Santal 33 smell like?

Cardamom, iris and violet open it. Ambrox, Australian sandalwood, papyrus and cedar carry it. The result reads dry and smoky rather than sweet: closer to leather and an open fire than to a creamy sandalwood.

What does Another 13 smell like?

Ambroxan, jasmine and moss. It sits close to the skin and smells animalic and slightly dirty, which is why most people call it hypnotic instead of pretty. It was made for AnOther Magazine in 2010.

What is the difference between Santal 33 and Another 13?

Santal 33 is woody smoke: dry, warm and instantly recognisable. Another 13 is a musk: skin-like, quieter and much harder to place. Santal 33 walks into the room with you. Another 13 makes people lean in.

Are Le Labo perfumes unisex?

Yes. None of the fine fragrances are filed under men or women. Rose 31 and Lys 41 are bought as often by men as by women, and the house has never split a shelf by gender.

How long does Le Labo perfume last?

These are eau de parfum concentrations, so most people get six to eight hours on skin and longer on fabric. Dry, woody and musky scents such as Santal 33, Another 13 and Vetiver 46 hold longer than the fresh citruses, Bergamote 22 and Baie 19.

Why is Le Labo perfume so expensive?

Small batches, high concentrations and hand work. Every bottle is blended and filled to order, then labelled by hand with the date and city. Raw materials are bought in limited quantities, so the cost base sits closer to a small atelier than a mass-market line.

Does Le Labo offer perfume refills?

Yes. Refills run in participating labs and online. You send or bring the empty bottle back and it is returned full, which costs less than a new bottle and keeps the glass, pump and label in circulation. Scent and size cannot be changed on a refill.

Where can I buy Le Labo perfume?

From this official site, from Le Labo labs and counters, and from selected authorised retailers. Every product on this site links to a live stock and price check, so you can compare before you buy.

Does Le Labo ever go on sale?

Rarely. The house keeps prices steady and does not run seasonal discount events. The one predictable exception is the City Exclusive collection, which normally sells only in its home city and opens worldwide for a limited window each year.
